material reciclado.
On top of a treacherous yet beautiful landscape, there
is a house in the daydreaming alley. A couple years ago, I got there looking
for an image: a handcrafted box, a box to keep the gifts of true love. In this
way, I descended little by little down that street, at the same time that,
before my eyes, a strange double size house appeared, with large glass windows
that allowed to see complicated figures made of paper. Out of it came out a
kind artist: Alberto Valenzuela, creator of the brand Papel Oaxaca, a space
devoted to the manufacturing of paper made by local fibers and recycled
materials.
With kindness, Valenzuela invited me to come into his house-workshop. It is such a wonderful experience, since all the space is dedicated to manufacture handcrafted paper: the walls are invaded by multiple shapes, while the wet sheets dyed in diverse color wait anxious for the sunlight to dry. The floor is splattered with the rough material that escapes from the Dutch machine or the wooden framework. However, climbing a few steps, the space steps into another rhythm, more quiet, away from the humidity and the machine noise, various objects are built from those paper sheets that some other time grasped life under the intense sun.
The artist explains me that Papel Oaxaca has currently started a new stage that consists in making a finely designed packaging that creates a unity with the product that contains, so that it is not so easily thrown away and it is reused instead. It is so that the packaging stops being merely a waste, and becomes in a sensorial object, a covering, a dress that when being removed unveils the heart!: “take off the flesh to show the heart”, Wow! The ideal packaging for the True Love gifts.
Finally, Valenzuela explained to me that the human essence dwells in handmade artifacts, since the hand is the product of a thousand year evolution that freed the thumb, making the hand the perfect tool: “we generate ideas and then objects, and the object creates us, it is a two way road, it is that which makes us humans.”
